iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro Teardown form iFixit discloses Battery, RAM Details, same repairability score as iPhone 11
iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have recently gone through the teardown process of private company iFixit. Both the devices have a common design and build which results in the same teardown process. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have obtained a repairability score of 6 out of 10 with 10 being the easiest to repair. The staff at iFixit also told that the teardown process is a little different compared to last year’s iPhone 11 device, and they also needed more heat to detach the display from the body.
iFixit livestreamed the iPhone 12 teardown on YouTube on Friday, shared the full details as they progressed. It can be noticed that some of the components placed in the iPhone 12 are comparatively smaller to the earlier iPhone 11 such as the Taptic engine and loudspeaker. Normally, turning on an iPhone, the display opens up to the left but not this time as it opens up to the right. iFixit also reveals that the displays of the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro work almost similarly as the minor difference between the two is brightness.
The key difference between the two devices is the camera module. Surprisingly, the modules are quite similar as the iPhone 12 comes with a plastic spacer where the iPhone 12 Pro boasts its LiDAR sensor. Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro phones have identical Taptic engine and battery, which is rated for 10.78Wh (or 2,815mAh) – smaller than the iPhone11’s 11.91 Wh and iPhone 11 Pro’s 11.67Wh batteries. One more teardown video had shown similar information.
Another crucial difference is the RAM – iFixit discovered Apple had used Micron LPDDR4 4GB RAM on the iPhone 12 and 6GB RAM on the iPhone 12 Pro. In addition, the teardown video also confirms the use of the Samsung storage and Qualcomm Snapdragon X55M 5G modem. iFixit dissembled the MagSafe charger which has a black ring of magnets around the exterior that corresponds to the iPhone 12 models.
iFixit highlights that many of the key components are modular and easy to access. However, the advanced waterproofing measures create some hindrances in repairing. The iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro got a reparability score of 6 out of 10 which is similar to the last year’s iPhone’s 11.
