The fixed quota of countries for the green card will end, the Indians included in the waiting list benefit
The US Senate unanimously passed the Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act on Thursday. This has raised the hopes of thousands of Indian IT professionals waiting for a green card for several decades. Through this act, the US has removed the green card limit issued every year.
The passing of this bill has brought great relief to Indian professionals who went to America on H1B visa. These professionals have been waiting for a green card to become American residents for a long time. The bill was passed by the US House of Representatives on 10 July 2019. Now it also got the approval of the Senate. It was sponsored by Republican Senator Mike Lee.
Family-based visa limit will increase
Passing this bill will also increase the family-based visa limit. Currently, 15% of the total visas are issued to any country. 7% of these visas are issued on a family basis. Apart from this, the bill will also remove the 7% limit on visas granted on an employment basis.
America’s economy will get stronger
Indian-American King Krishnamurthy was the co-sponsor of the bill in the House. According to Krishnamurthy, this law will give relief to those who have been on the waiting list for many years for the green card. Their waiting time will be strengthened by the American economy.
Krishnamurthy said that I am happy that senators from both parties passed this bill to strengthen our economy and attract talent from all over the world. This law will eliminate discrimination and give equal opportunity to high-skilled people. This will help American companies retain their talented people. I appeal to my colleagues and the President to take the last step to make these reforms a reality.
Green card is made for 10 years
The United States issues green cards to those who work from other countries. Its validity is 10 years. After this, it has to be renewed. It is in a way the Permanent Resident Card of America. Its color is green, so it came to be called Green Card.
Long waiting for a green card
Till now, America had fixed a quota of seven percent for each country. Others used to go on the waiting list. The waiting list got longer with time. According to an estimate, there are about 2 million people who are waiting for a green card. The new law will remove this limit. Will now get a green card based on merit.
