Smart home device sales grew rapidly in 2020, 51% of consumers working from home bought at least one smart device
People all over the world are increasingly incorporating smart devices into their lifestyles. A study by Xiaomi revealed that the number of people buying smart home products has increased drastically since March 2020. The survey revealed that 70 percent of consumers changed their surroundings due to spending more time at home during the epidemic. At the same time, 51 percent of consumers working from home bought at least one smart device during this period.
The survey was conducted by Wakefield Research among 1,000 nationally representative American adults. Participants took part in an online survey between December 11 and December 16, 2020.
63 percent bought smart home products: Three out of every five participants stated that the holiday and work environment had become one during the lockdown, so it was difficult for them to find a different place to rest at home. Of the participants in the study, 63 percent purchased a smart home product, 79 percent configured at least one room in their home, and 82 percent modified a room for work from home.
Talking about the study, Global Product Marketing Manager, Daniel Desjarlais said, “Smart living has always been about solving problems and re-arranging the physical space using technology, and we accelerated adoption in 2020.”
He further explained how connected homes, automated systems, and new technology are helping people build new ecosystems within their homes, including moving the old home into a new job or creating a more streamlined home.
Many people redesigned the empty space: Most people modified the existing locations of the house accordingly to complete the new work. This arrangement of space management was popular among all age groups – 63 percent of the participants redesigned the free space of the house to make it homier. This temporary arrangement was particularly popular among 91 percent of Generation Z (15 to 21 years old) and 80 percent of Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) modified their living space.
There are many advantages in a smart device home: Consumers purchased an average of two new smart devices for their home since March. The average number of Smart Home devices for Generation Z increased by 3. 82 percent of the participants agreed that a home with a smart device has many advantages.
39 percent of consumers will upgrade their devices: Consumers have started looking at smart home devices as a part of their long-term solutions. 60 percent of consumers will continue to use their home for activities that are usually done elsewhere. 39 percent of consumers will upgrade their devices and if house-dwelling orders continue even in the year 2021, 41 percent of consumers will redesign a room.
