Tech companies closing social media accounts with specific usernames, Instagram closed many accounts
Usernames have also become VIP on social media like the number of vehicles. These are called OG usernames. And there are many people who have this, cybercriminals are trying to snatch them by threatening them in many ways.
If successful, these accounts are also being sold on social media for Rs. 30 lakhs. Now to stop this, various social media companies have started banning OG username on their platform.
Know first what is OG username
OG, the original gangster, originated from US rap and hip-hop culture, a term used to refer to someone who is from an area in the beginning and understands it. These OG usernames are usually made up of a single word. This is why they are easily recognized. Early users of a social media platform get it easily.
Snatch tactics
Software engineer Ajay Pondicherry was one of the early users of Instagram, the user name was @ajay. Many people asked for this username from him, but they refused to accept it as their identity. In 2019, he suddenly got his email ID lock. The phone number associated with this was also taken away by someone else. The cybercriminal did this with a sim swap. Like Ajay, accounts of thousands of people have been hacked and sold.
Now social media companies awaken
Now Instagram claims to have banned hundreds of OG accounts. They were being investigated for the last one year, after which action was taken. Help was also given to identifying these accounts from Twitter, TikTok and other platforms. Twitter has also announced a campaign to close these accounts.
