SAIL can close the division headquarters anytime, employees are in danger of losing their jobs
The employees working on contract in Steel Authority of India may have to face more difficult times during the Corona period. This is because SAIL can “shut down” its raw material division headquarters at Kolkata at any time. This information was given by the sources on Saturday.
It is believed that this decision will be a big blow to the contractual employees attached to the unit. However, an official announcement is yet to be made in this matter. Sources say that the company’s board has decided to close down the division headquarters in Kolkata and transfer control of its mines to Rourkela Steel Plant (Odisha) and Bokaro Steel Plant (Jharkhand) depending on their location.
According to sources, SAIL’s mines located in Odisha will come under the administrative control of Rourkela Steel Plant while mines in Jharkhand will come under the jurisdiction of Bokaro Steel Plant. The move is likely to save the major steel company around Rs 40 crore annually. However, this can put the blame on the people working on the contract.
At the same time, the division headquarters in Kolkata has asked SAIL Chairman Soma Mandal to reconsider the decision and asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to intervene in the issue. Sources said the non-contractual employees at the division headquarters in Kolkata would be shifted to Rourkela and Bokaro.
However, there may be a setback in the job of contract employees. According to sources, a section of contractual employees had approached SAIL chairman Soma Mandal to reconsider the decision. At the same time, he had also sought the intervention of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Let us inform you that on Friday, the shares of SAIL Authority of India had gained five percent.
