Now UPI payment will also be done from feature phone: Transfer money from a phone with no internet button, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das launched a new feature

Now UPI payment will be done through feature phones as well. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das today launched separate UPI for this. Its name has been named UPI123Pay. He also launched a 24×7 helpline for digital payments. Its name is Digisathi. With the help of UPI123Pay, users will be able to make UPI payments from feature phones. All types of transactions can be done with this except Scan and Pay. With this, there will be no need of internet for payment. To use this facility, users will have to link their mobile number and bank account.

UPI123Pay will increase the use of digital payment in villages

The UPI payment platform was launched in 2016. Till now a smartphone was required for UPI payment. Because of this many people in the villages could not use it. In December last year, RBI had said that it would launch UPI for feature phones as well. RBI believes that with the introduction of UPI facility for feature phones, the use of digital payments will increase in villages. This will increase the reach of financial services. Many people in villages do not have smartphones. Apart from this, the availability of internet is also not guaranteed there.

What is meant by feature phone?

Feature phone means basic phone. This phone only has the feature of making calls, receiving calls and sending and receiving messages. Even today, a large part of the population uses these phones. Especially in villages, people use feature phones more.

Feature phone payment process

According to RBI, they will give users four options for making payments by giving them a menu of options and will add these features later. Through NPCI, feature phone users will be able to make payment in four ways.

First: IVR system or voice based system, in which users can make safe transactions by calling the given number of NPCI.

Second: Except Scan and Pay, all transactions will be done through this app-based channel, there will be an app in the feature phone. All transactions will be offered on the UPI app on the smartphone, except for the scan and payment feature. RBI is working on bringing Scan and Pay feature soon.

Third: Proximity sound based payment. The transaction will be for enabling sound waves enabled contacts and making contactless payments.

Fourth: Missed call based system, users will have to give a missed call after which call back will be available. Users can make payment by entering UPI PIN. The feature with digital payment from feature phones was already present in the country, but due to being USSD based, it was not used much. Users can use mobile banking without a smartphone or without an internet connection by using the *99# code.
