will have to remove the Lightning cable: Apple will have to replace the iPhone’s charging port, a blow to the European Union
The European Union has dealt a big blow to Apple. European Union countries and law makers have agreed on Tuesday that the mobile charging port of mobiles, tablets and cameras will be the same. This is the first time in the world that the company will decide which charging port will be installed in its device by an official order.
From 2024, there will be a change in the connector of the iPhone
With this decision of the European Union, Apple will have to change the connector of any iPhone it will sell in Europe from 2024. The European Commission believes that this will save the customer money. iPhones are charged with a Lightning cable, while devices running Android use USB-C connectors to charge. According to a 2019 Commission study, half of chargers sold with mobile phones in 2018 had USB Micro-B connectors, while 29% were USB-C connectors and 21% were Lightning connectors.
have to use different chargers
Belgium has been advocating for a common mobile charging port for all companies for the past decade. On the other hand, iPhone and Android users complained that they had to use different chargers for their different devices.
The EU’s industry chief, Thierry Breton, said the deal would save around 250 million euros for customers. “It will also allow new technologies like wireless charging to emerge and they will not have to worry that innovation will not allow market-sharing in the days to come,” he added.
