The first phase of the Digi Yatra project will start from August 15 at the airports of Bangalore and Varanasi. Under the project, passengers will be allowed to check-in at the airport using facial recognition technology. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia gave this information on Monday. Under the project, a passenger will have to use only his facial features to complete the formalities related to his boarding pass. In this way paperless and contactless check-in will be possible at various check points.
Jyotiraditya Scindia told through Twitter that on Monday he chaired a meeting of the advisory committee of his ministry on this project. It included members of various political parties. He wrote, ‘Discussed the working of our first project “Digi Yatra” to digitize the process related to passengers at airports. The first phase will start on August 15 at Bangalore and Varanasi airports. He said that privacy issues have also been taken care of in this project.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement that Digi Yatra provides a ‘centralized mobile wallet-based identity management platform’. It is cost effective and also takes care of privacy and data security issues. Under this project, Digi Yatra Foundation (DYF) will be a pan India unit and custodian of the passenger ID validation process. DYF has been incorporated in 2019 as a Joint Venture Company under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013.
Airports Authority of India holds 26 per cent of its shares, while the remaining 74 per cent will be held by private operators of airports in Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kochi. DYF will also develop consensus among aviation stakeholders in the country regarding this project. The ministry has said that Digi Yatra will also be started at the airports of Pune, Vijayawada, Kolkata, Delhi and Hyderabad by March next year.
