Universal charger rules in the EU apply: All electronic devices will be charged with a Type-C cable; Loss to Apple, know what will be the effect on India?

The European Union (EU) Parliament on Tuesday implemented the Universal Charger Rule. A single charging port will be required for mobile phones, tablets and cameras. By 2024, all electronics companies will have to add a Type-C charging portal to their devices.

According to a report, Europeans were spending billions of euros every year just on buying chargers. Most of the MPs in Parliament have supported this decision. Against 602 votes in support, only 13 votes were cast against.

What did the European Union say?

The European Union said – with this decision, consumers will be able to save up to 250 million euros ($ 267 million), i.e. up to Rs 2,075 crore every year on charger purchases. If similar chargers are available, then about 11 thousand tonnes of electronic waste can also be reduced. Apple had said on this that the decision of the Universal Charger of the EU will not only hurt the people of Europe, but customers all over the world.

Apple will suffer

The new rules will also have an effect on e-readers, earbuds and other technological devices. Experts believe that the EU’s decision will hurt Apple the most, as none of their devices have a Type-C cable.

Experts said that instead of adding a Type-C connector to older devices that charge with a Lightning cable, Apple may launch new devices with a Type-C connection.

What will be the effect on India?

There are a total of 27 countries in the European Union. The universal charger rule of the European Union will not apply to India. However, when a company like Apple makes one charger for the countries of the European Union, it will also want to make the same charger for the countries of the rest of the world, so that its cost can be reduced.
