The ban on VLC media player in India has now been lifted. Yes, VLC media player was banned by the Government of India earlier this year. The reason behind the ban is not yet clear. Now once again users can use this media player.
The information about the removal of the ban on the VLC media player was first given by the Internet Freedom Foundation. However, later VideoLAN itself has confirmed it. Now users can easily download VLC media player by visiting VideoLan website. So far 73 million people have downloaded this platform.
The reason behind the ban!
Going to the old news, VLC media player was banned under the IT Act, 2000. At that time, while opening the website of VLC Media, the message of being banned under the IT Act was visible on the screen. According to reports, Chinese connection is being said to be behind the ban of VLC media player. A Chinese hacking group Cicado used this video player platform to conduct a cyber attack in India.
India’s cyber security experts had found that this Chinese hacking group is using VLC Media Player to spread a suspected malware loader, which could be a major threat to India. For these reasons, this platform has been banned in India. However, the Government of India did not issue any official statement regarding the reason for banning it in India.
