IATA: Immense possibilities in Indian aviation market, Willie Walsh said this about India in Istanbul

International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General Willie Walsh said there is a “massive opportunity” in the Indian aviation market. Talking about the Indian market, he said that IATA’s Board of Governors (BoG) has CEOs of two Indian airlines and this has happened for the first time. “It reflects opportunity and vibrancy,” he said. “There is massive potential in the aviation sector in India and we are really excited about the future of aviation,” he said at a press conference on the sidelines of IATA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Istanbul.

Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson and IndiGo CEO Peter Albers are among the 31 airline CEOs in the BOG. On Monday, IATA announced that Albers will serve as the president of the BOG from June 2024.

India is one of the world’s fastest growing aviation markets and Air India has launched an ambitious expansion plan, while Indigo is set to fly to more international destinations. Earlier this year, Air India placed a historic order for 470 aircraft on Airbus and Boeing. Indian carriers on domestic routes carried 50.4 million passengers during the January-April period in 2023, up from 35.3 million in the year-ago period, according to the latest official data. It registered an increase of 42.88 percent on an annual basis.
