American company Micron will set up chip plant in Gujarat, government approved.

New Delhi: The government has approved US chip major Micron’s project to set up a semiconductor test and packaging unit in the country with an investment of $2.7 billion. Sources gave this information. The project is expected to create 5,000 jobs. Confirming the details of the project, a source said, “It was approved about a week ago.


Micron specializes in computer memory products, flash drives, etc. It will set up an OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) plant in India that will test and package its products to make them ready for use. In the first phase, the government has approved four OSAT projects. These include proposals from Tata Group, Sahasra Semiconductors.


Sahasra Semiconductors is the first OSAT plant, which is expected to start production soon, said another source. There was no immediate response from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Micron.
