New Delhi: Railways is working at a fast pace to provide Vande Bharat trains to every state. Hindalco Industries and Italy’s Metra SPA have signed an agreement to make coaches for Vande Bharat trains. The objective of this partnership is to bring large-sized aluminum extrusion and fabrication technology to manufacture high-speed aluminum rail coaches in India.
Hindalco, the largest aluminum rolling and recycling company, is involved in manufacturing coaches of Vande Bharat trains. It has partnered with Italy’s Metra SPA as a technology partnership. This Italian company is famous for its expertise in producing structured and value-added aluminum extrusions. This partnership provides Hindalco with a launching pad to pursue the ambitious upgrade of Indian Railways, which runs the world’s largest rail network.

Our combined expertise will enhance the efficiency, durability and sustainable performance of Vande Bharat trains and set new benchmarks for the Indian Railways industry.
The role of extruded aluminum is very important in the railway sector, because it reduces weight and increases mechanical strength. Metra has been manufacturing aluminum extrusions for the transportation sector for 60 years. The company has expertise in manufacturing and machining of railway extrusions. Enrico Zampedri, CEO of Metra SPA, said that together with Hindalco Industries, we are ready to redefine aluminum extrusion to build high-speed trains in India.
Hindalco plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore for the project to help manufacture passenger coaches for Vande Bharat trains. The new technology alliance will provide state-of-the-art technology for this effort.
Toughened high-grade aluminum alloys have emerged as the metal of choice worldwide for manufacturing high-speed railway coaches. This alloy enables beautiful design and greater speed due to its light weight. Aluminum rail cars are used in suburban metro systems and high-speed intercity and long-distance rail traffic in Europe, China and Japan.
