Government will not make 6 airbags mandatory for cars: Union Minister Gadkari said – due to competition, companies themselves will adopt it
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has made it clear that the government will not make 6 airbags mandatory for cars.
Last year, the government had proposed to make 6 airbags mandatory in every variant of the car from October 1 to increase the safety of people in the car.
Gadkari said that 6 airbags are needed in today’s market. Companies will have to provide 6 airbags to remain competitive. Companies which do not do this will have an impact on their sales.
Companies have started providing 6 airbags in cars
Addressing an event in Delhi, Gadkari said, ‘Many companies are now providing 6 airbags themselves. We do not want to make the rule of six airbags mandatory for cars. Bharat NCAP has started, now the manufacturers themselves will decide what to do. People are conscious about security. People will choose only the car which has 6 airbags.
What are airbags and how do they work?
Airbags are made of cotton. These have silicone coating and are filled with sodium azide gas.
These are installed on the sides of the car, above the doors or in the seats and at the front, on the dashboard and steering wheel.
In case of an accident, they open in less than a second and provide protection to the passenger’s head and chest.
These open like umbrellas with ISRS system and cover more space.
This prevents the body from hitting the dashboard. Airbags can cause injury if the seat belt is not worn.
If seat belt is not worn, there is a possibility of neck fracture due to airbag and also facial injury.
