‘Make in India’ chip will come by 2024, work starts in Micron’s Rs 22500 crore plant
New Delhi: Union IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told IANS on Saturday that global chip makers have realized India’s potential and US-based Micron Technology has laid the groundwork for its Rs 22,500-crore plant here, which will be our Will set a standard for semiconductor travel. Saying that the first ‘Make in India’ chip from Micron’s plant is likely to arrive in December 2024, the minister said the speed with which Micron started work on the Sanand project is highly commendable.
Vaishnav asserted, “This plant sets a major milestone for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a semiconductor hub – the way the country has done in mobile, electronics, defence, railways, aviation and many other sectors. Progress has been shown.” The minister stressed that the Micron plant in Sanand will serve as a base industry to create such base industries across the country.
Micron’s Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) is being set up on 93 acres at Sanand GIDC-II Industrial Estate and is expected to be operational within 18 months. The facility will focus on converting wafers into ball grid arrays (BGAs) – integrated circuit packages, memory modules and solid-state drives. According to the minister, the government has also received some more semiconductor manufacturing proposals and an announcement will be made soon.
“Chips are an integral part of our lives today. Semiconductor manufacturing is also going to be helped by the IT Hardware PLI 2.0 in a very big way, as this PLI has special incentives for chips that are manufactured in India,” Vaishnav told IANS. Are.”
More than 45 companies have submitted applications under PLI Hardware 2.0 and “many of them are already in the process of setting up their plants,” the minister said. He said the demand for semiconductors in India will increase from about Rs 2 lakh crore so far to Rs 5 lakh crore in the next few years. Vaishnav also said that a high-speed train will start running between Ahmedabad and Sanand in the next six months.
