Amazon: Amazon will transport cargo packages through Ganga river waterway, signed agreement with IWAI
E-commerce company Amazon will now transport its goods through river Ganga through waterways. For this, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and Amazon Seller Services have signed an agreement. It aims to promote movement of goods through waterways using the river Ganga.
Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal witnessed this important agreement. Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal said that the first ship with e-commerce cargo will soon be dispatched from Patna to Kolkata. He said the partnership aims to leverage the efficiency and sustainability of water transportation. It also aims to streamline logistics, reduce environmental impact and promote economic growth.
Sonowal described the agreement between IWAI and Amazon Seller Services as important for the development of waterways in India. He said that under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, special attention has always been given to making waterways a widespread and popular means of transportation. The government is making tireless efforts towards realizing this vision of PM Modi so that the development of waterways can be ensured. It is moving towards becoming a self-reliant India. The Union Minister said that the launch of this service will provide an opportunity to artisans, entrepreneurs and traders to easily sell their products in the large market nationally and internationally at affordable costs.
Shipment transportation costs will decrease
This agreement will enable Amazon to utilize all possible modes of transportation in the country including rail, air, water and road to ensure faster, cost-effective, sustainable and more reliable delivery of online orders to customers. This partnership will not only benefit Amazon by reducing transportation costs of shipments, but will also open up new opportunities for all e-commerce companies to take advantage of the inland waterways in India.
