Cabinet: Approval of incentive scheme of Rs 8,500 crore, projects to make gas from coal will get help.
The Union Cabinet approved an incentive scheme of Rs 8,500 crore for coal gasification projects. Adoption of gasification technology in India is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on imports of natural gas, methanol, ammonia and other essential products.
Sources said the Cabinet has approved an incentive scheme of Rs 8,500 crore for coal gasification projects. The government is aiming to gasify 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal by 2030.
In the gasification process, coal is partially oxidized by air, oxygen, steam or carbon dioxide under controlled conditions to produce a liquid fuel called syngas. Syngas or synthesis gas can be used to generate electricity and also to make methanol.
The Union Cabinet has approved the joint venture of CIL and GAIL for synthetic gas production. Whereas CIL’s joint venture with BHEL has been approved for the production of ammonium nitrate from coal. This information was given by the government.
