Now every hand will have Made in India iPhone! Government gives green signal to Ratan Tata’s plan
New Delhi: iPhone manufacturing in the country has got a big boost. The Competition Commission of India has given the green signal to the Tata-Wistron deal. Tata Electronics had signed a deal in October last year to buy the Indian operations of Taiwanese company Wistron. Wistron has a plant near Bengaluru in which iPhones are assembled. Talks for this deal were going on between Tata Group and Wistron for about a year. This plant of Wistron is known for the production of iPhone-14 model. Currently more than 10,000 workers work in this plant. Wistron’s Indian plant is manufacturing iPhones in its 8 production lines.
Taiwanese company Wistron manufactures electronic goods on contract. Wistron wants to exit the iPhone business in India and Tata had shown interest in buying it. After Tata’s acquisition, Wistron will be completely out of the Indian market, as it is the company’s only plant producing Apple products in India. Taiwanese company Wistron entered the Indian market in 2008, when the company used to provide repair facilities for many devices. In 2017, the company expanded its operations and started producing iPhones for Apple.
Amid the dispute between China and America, Apple had announced plans to shift about 25% of its global production to India. Of the three Taiwanese firms that assemble Apple products, only Wistron is leaving India. Foxconn and Pegatron have expanded their production lines in India. The Indian government is giving incentives to companies to increase their production and employment. International companies are reducing their dependence on China. In such a situation, India has emerged as a preferred country for investment. Tata Group has recently entered electronic production. The company’s factory in Tamil Nadu makes the iPhone’s chassis, i.e. the metal backbone of the device. The company has also shown interest in making chips.
