Star Health Insurance Company became the target of hackers, policyholders’ data was stolen

Star Health, one of the biggest health insurance companies, has said that it was the target of a cyber attack last month. Important data of the company was stolen in this cyber attack. Star Health has filed a criminal complaint regarding this. Along with this, the insurance and cyber security regulatory authorities have been informed about this matter.

The company has told TechCrunch in a statement that it has become a victim of a data theft incident. This matter was reported about two weeks ago. The company has said that hackers have breached ‘important data’. However, it has not confirmed whether customer data has also been stolen in this cyber attack. Recently a report claimed that hackers used Telegram chatbots to breach the company’s data.

Star Health said that a forensic investigation is being conducted by cyber security experts. Along with this, the company is working closely with the government and regulatory authorities at every stage of the investigation. In this cyber attack that took place last month, personal data of about 3.1 crore policyholders of the company and data of more than 58 lakh insurance claims are reported to have been stolen. It was reported that this data was later leaked through the messaging platform Telegram. After this, the company filed a legal case against Telegram for allegedly helping in leaking this data.

The Madras High Court had ordered Telegram to block such chatbots and websites in the country that have made this data available online. Apart from this, Star Holth has also filed a complaint against software company Cloudflare for providing services to the websites hosting the leaked data. In the last few years, cases of hackers breaking into the databases of companies have increased. In some of these cases, hackers also demanded a huge amount of money for not leaking the data.
