Amazon-Nokia patent dispute settled: Both companies withdrew lawsuits against each other; there was a disagreement over video technology patents
Finnish tech company Nokia has settled a patent dispute with Amazon related to video technology. Nokia said that a patent agreement has been reached between the two companies.
Under this, Amazon will now be able to use Nokia’s video patents in streaming services and devices. After this agreement, both the companies have withdrawn the lawsuits filed against each other. However, the companies have kept the terms of the agreement confidential.
Nokia’s video technology used without permission
The dispute started in October 2023. Then Nokia filed a case against Amazon in the patent courts of UK, Germany, India, US and Europe.
Amazon was accused of using Nokia’s video compression, content delivery, recommendation and hardware related patents in Prime Video and devices without permission.
Nokia had also filed a case against HP
Earlier, Nokia had also filed a case against tech company HP (Hewlett-Packard) in the US court. This case was also related to the use of video technology without permission. However, Nokia had signed an agreement with HP in October 2024.
Nokia has more than 20 thousand patents
Nokia has 20,000+ patents related to video technology, which are used by companies around the world on license.
On the agreement with Amazon, Nokia said that this agreement shows the strength of their innovation and patent portfolio. However, the two companies have not shared the financial or technical details of the agreement. There has been no response from Amazon yet.
