Renault Group will buy the remaining stake of Nissan-Renault joint venture: This deal will be with Nissan Motor Corp, it currently has 51% stake

Renault Group has announced that it will acquire the remaining 51% stake in joint venture Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Limited (RNAIPL). Currently this stake is held by Nissan Motor Corp.

This move is part of the ongoing restructuring of their partnership. Both automakers have also agreed to change their cross-share-holding, under which both parties will now have the option to reduce their stake from 15% to 10%.

This transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed by the end of May 2025. After the acquisition, RNAIPL will be fully integrated into the financial statements of Renault Group. With this, Renault Group will acquire the entire 100% stake in Nissan’s India unit.

Renault will retain its 18.66% stake in Nissan

Renault will retain its 18.66% stake in Nissan through a French trust. Nissan will be freed from its commitment to invest in Ampere, terminating the investment agreement signed in July 2023.

Renault Group interested in improving Nissan’s performance

Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo said, “As Nissan’s long-term partner in the Alliance and its main shareholder, Renault Group has a keen interest in improving Nissan’s performance.”

Nissan will maintain its strong presence in India

The company said in an official release that despite giving up its stake in RNAIPL, Nissan will maintain its strong presence in India. The company will focus on expanding its market coverage. The Chennai-based RNAIPL plant will continue to produce Nissan models, including the new Nissan Magnite, which will play an important role in the company’s growth plan.

The Chennai plant with a capacity of over 4 lakh units will also help Renault Group strengthen its presence in India as part of the French car maker’s ‘2027 International Game Plan’. Renault plans to introduce the CMF-B platform at the Chennai plant in 2026, starting with four new models.

Renault Group and Nissan are also deepening their cooperation in Europe

Beyond India, Renault Group and Nissan are also deepening their cooperation in Europe. Renault’s EV-focused subsidiary Ampere will develop and produce a new A-segment Twingo derivative for Nissan, which will be launched in 2026.
