Air India introduces Apple AirTag support for baggage tracking, know how it works

Air India has integrated Apple AirTag into its baggage-tracking system and mobile app, allowing passengers with iPhone, iPad or Mac devices to easily track their checked luggage. The airline said it is the first airline in Asia to offer this type of facility. The company said it manages more than 100 million baggage items annually, with 99.6 percent of baggage reaching passengers on time. For some baggage delayed due to airport problems or missed flights, the AirTag integration will help speed up recovery. Let’s know about it in detail.

Tracking made easy

Air India said passengers can track their bags in real time by scanning the barcode on their baggage receipt or using the My Trips section of the mobile app, the Track My Bags tab on its website.

How to use AirTag in case of lost baggage

First of all, passengers have to report the lost baggage, if the baggage with the AirTag does not reach the designated destination, then passengers should report it to the Air India baggage counter. Staff will help passengers file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). Generate a Share Item Location link in the Apple Find My app and provide it to Air India. Go to the Customer Support Portal and select Baggage and then select Lost and Found Check-in Baggage and include the link.

Go to the Customer Support Portal, select Lost and Found Check-in Baggage and submit the link with the PIR number. Passengers will receive an acknowledgement email from Air India with a link to track the status of the baggage. Air India’s authorized airport team will use the shared AirTag data to locate the bag if it is inside the airport premises and return it as soon as possible.

Air India said that privacy will be given first priority. Location sharing automatically stops when the bag is received and ends after 7 days. Apart from this, passengers can turn it off manually at any time. The airline said that this feature requires Apple devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2 or macOS 15.2 or later.
