World’s first renewable energy-powered city being built in India, will be the capital of this state

Andhra Pradesh’s future capital Amaravati is on its way to make history. The city is aiming to become the world’s first city to be powered entirely by renewable energy. City planners are preparing to build a modern and eco-friendly ‘People’s Capital’. According to officials, with an ambitious plan to produce 2,700 MW of renewable energy, the city intends to meet all its power needs from sustainable sources such as solar, wind and hydropower.

Rs 65,000 crore project

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s ambitious new capital city project reflects India’s broad commitment to renewable energy and climate action. The foundation stone of this new capital, to be built on the banks of the Krishna river, is likely to be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this month. The Rs 65,000 crore project will be spread over 217 square kilometres. While the Andhra Pradesh capital region is spread over 8,352 square kilometres.

Amaravati needs 2,700 MW of power by 2050

Officials said the new capital being developed between Vijayawada and Guntur will not only showcase India’s innovation in green urban planning but also strengthen its leadership in the global clean energy transition. Chief Minister Naidu said this 2,700 MW capacity will not only ensure zero dependence on fossil fuels but will also set a global benchmark for urban sustainability. By incorporating state-of-the-art energy infrastructure in its smart city design, Amaravati has the potential to become a role model for future cities across the world. Officials also said that by 2050, Amaravati will require 2,700 MW of power, of which at least 30 per cent will be derived from renewable energy sources including solar and wind power.
