Facebook took action on 3.33 crore content in one and a half months

Internet giants have started complying with the new Information Technology (IT) rules that came into effect from May 26 this year in the country. Facebook has processed more than 33.3 million content in India between June 16 and July 31 across 10 categories of infringement. The social media platform gave this information in its compliance report on Tuesday.

Facebook’s photo-sharing platform, Instagram, took action against 2.8 million content across nine categories during the same period. The company said it received complaints from 1,504 users on Facebook and 265 on Instagram through its Indian complaints system between June 16 and July 31, and it has acted on all of them.

A Facebook spokesperson said that over the years, the company has continuously invested in the technology, people and processes to keep users safe online and enable them to express their views freely on its platform.

“We use artificial intelligence, complaints from our community and reviews conducted by our team to identify and review content that violates our policies,” the spokesperson said in a statement. We have published our second Monthly Compliance Report for a period of 46 days from 16th June to 31st July, complying with the Information Technology (IT) norms.

He said the report details the frequent removal of content using automated tools and the complaints and actions taken by the users.

Search engine Google removed 95,680 content in July

Google said that in July it had received 36,934 complaints from users and based on these removed 95,680 content, which is the highest ever. In addition to user complaints, Google also removed 5,76,892 items in July on the basis of automatic identification. Earlier in June, it had received 36,265 complaints and based on these, 83,613 items were removed. In May, 71,132 items and in April 59,350 items were removed. The company said some of these complaints were related to intellectual property rights violations, while others called for removal of materials on grounds such as defamation.

While WhatsApp banned 80 lakh accounts per month, in its compliance report issued under these rules, WhatsApp said that in 46 days from June 16 to July 31, it has banned more than 30 lakh Indian accounts.

WhatsApp said in its report that it had received 594 complaint reports during the said period. WhatsApp has earlier reported that more than 95 per cent of the restrictions on accounts were due to unauthorized use of automated or bulk messaging. The global average of accounts being banned by WhatsApp to prevent abuse of its platform is 8 million accounts per month. Digital platforms with more than 50 lakh users will have to publish the report every month. The report will also include the number of specific communication links or pieces of information that have been removed or closed due to surveillance using automated systems.
