Maximum power demand in Delhi increased to 6194 MW, highest ever for the first week of May.

New Delhi, May 2 (PTI) As the scorching heat continued, the maximum power demand in the national capital on Monday rose to 6,194 MW, the highest ever in the first week of May. This information was provided by officers.

Electricity demand exceeded 6,000 MW for the first time in April. It was over 6,000 MW on several days in the last week of April amid a rise in maximum temperatures.

Realtime data from State Load Despatch Centre, Delhi shows that Delhi’s maximum demand at 3.34 pm on Monday was 6,194 MW. A day earlier it was 6,048 MW.

Discom officials said, “The maximum power demand in Delhi has reached 6194 MW, which is the highest ever in the first week of May. Earlier in the first week of May, the previous maximum demand was recorded at 5,808 MW on May 2, 2019.

The Delhi government has alleged shortage of coal in thermal power plants, fearing supply disruption. The Center has assured that the discoms (power distribution companies) in Delhi will be provided electricity as per their requirement.

In view of the heat and high demand for power, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission last week relaxed several provisions related to short-term power purchase in the capital to enable discoms to procure available power without any loss of time.

Three discoms in Delhi – TPDDL, BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd) and BYPL (BSES Yamuna Power Ltd) – have forecast a substantial increase in power demand in their areas of supply this summer.

Last year, the maximum demand of TPDDL was 2,106 MW, which is expected to go up to 2,350 MW this summer.

The Union Power Ministry said that a total capacity of 6,892 MW is available for Delhi and there is no shortfall in supply to the capital.
