Big impact of power shortage: After 7 years, the largest coal mine company will import fuel, to help in the crisis

In view of the continuous power shortage in the country, the government-owned Coal India has taken a big decision. Coal India is going to import coal after 7 years. This will be the first time after 2015 that Coal India will import. This is being done so that the situation of power crisis that happened in April can be avoided. At present, the country is facing the worst power crisis in the last 6 years.

According to the letter written by the Ministry of Power on May 28, Coal India will import coal on a government-to-government basis. This coal will be supplied to the state power producers and thermal power plants of Independent Power Producers (IPPs). Coal India is one of the largest coal companies in the world.

States had demanded from the Center

This letter from the Ministry of Power has been sent to all the top central and state energy officials, including the coal secretary and the chairman of Coal India. The country is expected to face coal shortage during the third quarter of 2022. The demand for electricity will also increase during this period.

According to the letter by the Ministry of Power, the states had said that there would be a possibility of disturbances due to the issuance of separate tenders for coal import, hence the demand for import was made at the central level through Coal India.

All under process tenders will be suspended

Earlier this month, the government had also directed all states and companies operating from domestic coal to import at least 10% of the coal requirement. The Ministry of Power on Saturday asked the states to suspend all the ongoing under process tenders.

The ministry said that under process tenders may be kept on waiting list for procurement of coal at the lowest possible rates. States and Independent Power Producers (IPP) process for import of coal will carry out procurement in a G2G manner.
