Facebook’s parent company Meta gets tough, 8 lawsuits filed

Eight lawsuits have been filed against Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta. The company is accused of having an adverse effect on the youth due to the algorithm of their social media platform. All these lawsuits against Meta have been filed in the domestic market i.e. in the US.

According to a Bloomberg report, these lawsuits have been filed against Facebook’s parent company last week. Due to the addiction of the company’s social media platforms- Facebook and Instagram, youth have tried to commit suicide. Also, many bad symptoms have been seen in them including eating disorder and sliplessness.

Attorney Andy Birchfield, principal attorney at Beasley Allen law firm, said these apps should be designed keeping in mind the least potential harm, but despite this, it has been made to ace, which is affecting the youth.

In the lawsuit filed, Meta and Snap Inc. But some of the ongoing cases have been built on the basis of which were filed by the parents of the children who lost their lives. This lawsuit has been filed in the past after the company denied the mental effect of the app on the youth.

Meta spokesperson said

A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit filed against the company and said that the company has developed a tool for parents to track their children’s activities. Apart from this, the feature of setting time limit on Instagram has also been added. In addition, Meta also offers its users the “Take a Break” feature so that users can take a break from the social media platform at any time.

A company spokesperson also said that an artificial intelligence tool is also being developed to prevent children under the age of 13 from signing up on the social media platform. Also, companies are making it difficult for users to find content like sensitive content, eating disorder.

In the lawsuit filed on Meta, a case was filed by a 22-year-old girl named Naomi Charles. Naomi has been using Meta platforms since she was a minor. In her case, Naomi told that due to social media she has to face many other side effects including suicide attempts. The lawsuits against the company have been filed in Miami as well as Texas, Tennessee, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois and Missouri.
