Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani on Monday. Meanwhile, Asia’s richest businessman assured the completion of the transmission line under Godda Power Project by December.

Adani Power, a company of the Adani Group, has set up a 1600 MW thermal power plant in Godda, Jharkhand. Electricity will be supplied to Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) through the transmission line. The agreement was signed in 2016.

After meeting Hasina, Gautam Adani shared a picture on Twitter. With this he wrote, ‘It is an honor to meet the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina in Delhi. His vision for Bangladesh is inspirational and bold. We are committed to the commissioning of 1600 MW Godda Power Project and Dedicated Transmission Line to Bangladesh on Vijay Diwas on 16th December 2022.

Bangladesh an important partner

Bangladesh is an important partner under India’s “neighbourhood first” policy. The scope of cooperation between the two countries spans many sectors including security, trade, power and energy, transport and connectivity, science and technology, defense sector, rivers and maritime affairs. Hasina, who is on a four-day visit to India, began her diplomatic meeting in New Delhi on Monday by holding talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Agreement for the construction of two plants

The Jharkhand government and Adani Power had signed an agreement in February 2016 for the construction of two plants of 800 MW each. Under this, 1600 MW of electricity produced here is to be sent directly to Bangladesh through a special transmission line. It was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Bangladesh visit in 2015. This was later agreed upon during the visit of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Delhi.

Land acquisition for power plant was difficult

At one time land acquisition was also a big challenge for Adani’s power plant which is almost ready. It was not easy to get land in the district due to the SPT Act and Podaihat MLA Pradeep Yadav was openly opposing it with his supporters regarding many other issues including compensation amount.

Later the local people gave their lands for the development of the area and today the company is almost ready.
