6000 people will be laid off again in Philips, 4000 jobs were terminated three months ago.
Troubled Dutch medical tech maker Philips announced major layoffs on Monday. The company said that it will cut 6000 jobs worldwide due to the deepening of the sleep device recall and the damage caused to the company. The company had announced a cut of 4000 jobs about three months ago, after which this is the second biggest layoff announcement from the company. The company’s CEO Roy Jacobs has said that the company will lay off these employees by 2025.
Company CEO Jacobs said in a statement that 2022 has been a very difficult year for Philips and our stakeholders, taking these actions to improve our execution and enhance performance. The Amsterdam-based firm reported a net loss of 105 million euros ($114 million) for the fourth quarter of 2022 and a net loss of 1.6 billion euros for the previous year, leading to the massive recall. Philips announced a massive recall in 2021 of its devices used to treat people suffering from sleep apnea.
Philips CEO Roy Jacobs said in the statement that the workforce is being cut immediately in 4000 roles globally to improve productivity and aging workforce. This decision is difficult, but necessary. We do not take this lightly and have the utmost respect for the employees affected. Jacobs said, these preliminary works need to be done, so that the company can be turned around to see the profitable growth potential of Philips and create profit for our stakeholders.
Philips, which started as a lighting company more than 130 years ago, has gone through a lot of transformation in recent years. The company’s focus is now on manufacturing healthcare products. The company sold off assets to focus on making high-end electronic healthcare products. The questions raised about some of the company’s products and then the announcement of their recall made the company’s market fall further.
