Tata signs purchasing agreement with Airbus-Boeing: The deal was done in February regarding the purchase of aircraft, Air India will get 470 aircraft.
Tata Group’s airline Air India has signed a purchasing agreement with Airbus and Boeing to buy 470 aircraft. Air India has shared this information on Twitter.
In February this year, Air India had announced the order of 250 aircraft to French company Airbus and 220 aircraft to American company Boeing to expand its fleet and network. Air India will spend 70 billion dollars i.e. 5.74 lakh crore rupees to buy these aircrafts.
Air India’s order includes all these aircraft
Air India’s firm order includes 34 A350-1000, 6 A350-900, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 10 Boeing 777X wide body aircraft. Apart from this, 140 Airbus A320neo, 70 Airbus A321neo and 190 Boeing 737MAX narrowbody aircraft are also included.
Out of this order of Air India, 31 aircraft will join the service by the end of this year, the remaining aircraft will come by mid-2025. Air India has already started taking delivery of 11 leased B777 and 25 A320 aircraft to boost its business.
Tata Group’s 4 airlines have 220 aircraft
- Tata Group’s Air India, Air Asia India, Vistara and Air India Express have 220 aircraft
- Of these, 172 were narrow body and 48 were wide body. 45 wide body jets to be used for overseas travel segment
- Competitor Indigo has 300 aircraft, which will be used for domestic and short-haul destinations.
- Indigo the market leader with 54.9% share. Tata group airlines control 26% of domestic air traffic
- Air India’s monopoly in the overseas travel segment. Especially in American and European destinations
- All Indian carriers have about 800 aircraft, of which 500 are Airbus narrow body aircraft.

Air India is also looking to expand its service to other long-haul destinations around the world by inducting new aircraft into the fleet. Right now foreign airlines are dominating here and they are controlling this large part of the market very comfortably. With the entry of Air India into this market, the Gulf carriers will face direct competition from the Indian airlines.
