Apple closed the electric car project: The company could not even make a prototype in 10 years, 2000 employees will be affected.
American tech company Apple has decided to discontinue its electric car project. The company was working on this project for the last decade. But, no physical prototype could be prepared yet. This decision of Apple will affect about 2000 employees of the Special Project Group (SPG) working on the company’s first EV project ‘Titan’.
Car project team will shift to AI division
According to media reports, this decision was shared by Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Vice President in-charge of the project Kevin Lynch with the employees working on the project on Tuesday.
Both the company officials told the employees that all the SPG employees will be shifted to the Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) division under John Giannandrea.
The company wanted to make a car that runs on voice commands
The company wanted to make a car that would be completely automatic and run on voice commands. For this, billions of dollars had been invested in this project which started in 2015. If this project had been successful, the company could have launched the car by 2028 at a price of one lakh dollars (about Rs 82.90 lakh).
CEO Team Cook was under pressure to close the project
Apple had rescheduled the launch date of its first EV to 2019, 2020, 2026 and 2028. According to the report, the company’s board was also putting pressure on CEO Tim Cook to prepare a concrete plan on the project soon or to close the project.
