Satellite internet in India: Leave Musk… Ambani is bringing satellite internet in India, got approval

Reliance Industries’ joint venture between Jio Platforms and Luxembourg-based SES has received approval from the Indian space regulator to operate a satellite to provide gigabit fiber internet. News agency Reuters has given this information in its report quoting a government official. Three approvals were issued to Orbit Connect India, which aims to provide satellite based high-speed internet access. This approval came at a time when many companies from Amazon.com to Elon Musk’s Starlink are competing for permission to start satellite communication services in the world’s most populous country. This approval allows Orbit Connect to operate satellites over India. But further approval is required from the country’s Department of Telecommunications to begin operations.

This company also got approval

Another company Inmarsat, which wants to provide high-speed satellite-based internet, has also got approval to operate satellites over India. In-Space Chairman Pawan Goenka told this to Reuters. Two other companies, including Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon.com’s Kuiper, have also applied. Eutelsat’s Bharti Enterprises-backed OneWeb was given all approvals late last year.

36% growth annually

According to consultancy firm Deloitte, India’s satellite broadband service market is expected to grow by 36% annually over the next five years and reach $1.9 billion by 2030. Around the world, the race to connect rural areas through space-based Internet is gaining momentum. Amazon plans to invest $10 billion in its Kuiper project, which was announced in 2019, the same year SpaceX began deploying its first operational Starlink satellites.
