TRAI: Big action against telemarketing companies, 50 blacklisted, 8 lakh complaints received

Spam Calls and Messages: Telemarketing companies have made life difficult for mobile phone users. There have also been complaints of online fraud against such companies. Telecom sector regulator TRAI had received about 8 lakh complaints of various types against telemarketing companies. TRAI had instructed telecom companies to take appropriate action regarding these. Now telecom companies have blacklisted about 50 telemarketing companies that do not follow the guidelines.

Tremendous increase in spam calls and messages in six months

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India informed that there has been a tremendous increase in spam calls and messages in recent times. In the first half of the year 2024 (from January to June), more than 7.9 lakh complaints were filed against unregistered telemarketers (UTM). Taking this issue seriously, TRAI had issued strict instructions to all access providers on August 13, 2024.

TRAI had given instructions to take strict action against unregistered telemarketers

TRAI had said that action should be taken against unregistered telemarketers and message senders using SIP, PRI or other telecom resources. Orders were given to stop the promotional voice calls of such telemarketers immediately. It was also said that any unregistered telemarketer found misusing the system will have to face serious consequences. They can also be blacklisted and disconnected from all telecom resources for up to 2 years.

2.75 lakh SIP, DID and mobile numbers disconnected

Following these instructions, telecom companies have taken strict action against companies misusing resources for spam calls and messages. About 50 companies have been blacklisted. Also, more than 2.75 lakh SIP, DID, mobile numbers and telecom resources have been disconnected. These steps are expected to have a significant impact in reducing spam calls and providing relief to consumers. TRAI has also appealed to all stakeholders to follow the guidelines and contribute in creating a clean and efficient telecom ecosystem.
