Google Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai has announced that the company will cut 10% of jobs in managerial roles, including directors and vice presidents. The company is reducing the number of its employees amid growing competition in AI from competitors such as OpenAI.

According to a Business Insider report, Pichai has said that Google has made changes in the last few years to make the company efficient and simplify its structure. Google will now cut jobs in positions such as manager, director and vice president.

The report quoted a Google spokesperson as saying that some of the 10% jobs were converted to individual contributor roles, while some roles have been eliminated.

Google cut 12,000 jobs in January 2022

In the last two years, Google has taken several steps to increase efficiency. Earlier in September 2022, Pichai had said that he wanted Google to become 20% more efficient. After this, in January 2022, Google cut 12,000 jobs.

Google has now again taken the step of layoffs due to its AI competitors like OpenAI, which are bringing new products. These products can affect Google’s search business.

Google incorporated generative AI features in its core business

In response to competition from OpenAI, Google has incorporated generative AI features in its core business. The company has also launched several new AI features. This includes a new AI video generator and a new set of Gemini models to compete with OpenAI.

Google cut 200 jobs from the core team in May 2024

Apart from this, in the meeting on Wednesday, Pichai explained the meaning of the word ‘Googleness’ and said that employees are needed to update Modern Google. According to reports, in May 2024, Google cut 200 jobs from its core team as part of cost reduction for the restructuring process. Apart from this, some jobs were transferred overseas.
