The maximum number of hours of daily work in India may soon be increased to 12. So far, a maximum of 10.5 hours of work can be done legally from any employee in a day. The Ministry of Labour has made a proposal in Parliament asking to consider the maximum working hours to 12 hours. However, the maximum working hours in a week will be 48 hours, it will not increase. That is, if an employee works for 12 hours daily, then he will work only 4 days a week and leave for 3 days or he will get overtime. In such a situation, a debate has also started on what the system is in the rest of the world, let’s take a look at the system of the other countries.

How many hours work in which country

If we talk about the world, then an employee has to work a maximum of 48 hours a week and a minimum of 35 hours. In countries like India, UK, Germany, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, 48 hours a week are employed. However, the daily working hours in all these countries are 8, whereas in India these hours can be 12, which is currently 10.5.The best situation is in France, where you have to work 7 hours a day and 35 hours a week. Similarly, Australia has to work for 7.6 hours a day and 38 hours a week. On the other hand, in countries like USA, Canada, China, Taiwan and South Korea, there is a rule to work a maximum of 8 hours a day and a maximum of 40 hours a week.

What are the standards of international labour organization?

If this is happening around the world, under the International Labour Organization (ILO) standard, industrial workers can be employed for 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week. In the works which have to be carried out immediately after one shift, another work has been allowed to take up to 56 hours a week. On the other hand, an employee is allowed to take 8 hours of daily work in 3 weeks.

More work in India will get overtime

The Ministry of Labour said that this has been done keeping in mind the adverse climatic conditions of India, where the work is divided throughout the day. This will allow workers to earn more through overtime allowance. “We have made the necessary provision in the draft rules so that all workers working more than eight hours can get overtime,” the official said.According to the draft rules of the OSH Code, 15 to 30 minutes of time will be counted as 30 minutes in calculating overtime on any given day. Under the current system, no less than 30 minutes are counted as overtime.
