L&T’s big achievement, the country’s first building made from 3D print

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a technology, engineering and construction giant, has succeeded in building the country’s first building using 3D printing technology. The group’s construction company L&T Construction has built the first building in the country with this technology. This is being considered a major achievement for the country as the government has set an ambitious target of constructing 6 crore houses to give a home to all by 2022. The company says that this achievement will accelerate plans to build houses on a large scale.

The company has built a two-storey house in its Kanchipuram facility using 3D printing technology which is spread over 700 sq ft. It is made from a special type of concrete mix prepared by the company. The company developed it with regular construction material. The entire building is 3D printed except for horizontal slabs members. It was produced from Fully Automated 3D Printer and took 106 printing hours to make.

What is 3D printing?

3D printing is a process in which a material is printed layer by layer under computer control to create a 3-dimensional product. It is used in manufacturing industries to print rapid prototypes, complex shapes, and small batch production. Special polymers and metal alloys are used for this. 3D printing with concrete is currently being done worldwide. Earlier in November last year, the team built a one-bedroom apartment in 240-sqft with the help of 3D printing. It was built along the lines of the EWS Building.
