Notice to the Center on the petition to write the country of origin of products on the e-commerce platform

The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Center and other concerned people after hearing a petition seeking to show the name of the producer country on the goods being sold online. The Delhi High Court has sought a response from the Center on the plea seeking directions to the e-commerce websites regarding MRP, vendor details, manufacturer’s name and manufacturer’s country on the products offered for sale on e-commerce websites.

This case has been going on since last year. After the China border dispute, there was a lot of trouble in this case, after which the products of many Chinese companies were thrown by people and many were boycotted. After that, a petition was filed in the court demanding that all the products sold on the e-commerce site should be given MRP of the product along with information like its production, producer, product’s parent company and country of origin.

Following the violence with China on the border, trade organizations called on the retailer to boycott Chinese products. After this, the Department of Industry and Internal Trade Promotion (DPIIT) had also appealed to the government to direct e-commerce companies to write the name of their country of origin in front of each product so that the customer can know where the goods are made before purchasing.
